Grief counselling serves an invaluable role in the recovery process, especially when a person’s grief has become so heavy that it impedes upon their ability to live their day-to-day lives.

The Functions of a Grief Counsellor

The main focus of a grief counsellor’s profession is to help their patients cope with the feelings surrounding their grief and to move on in a healthy way. The acceptance of a recent loss is the toughest part for many who are affected after the death of a loved one, and this acceptance is ultimately the goal of this part of the process. Healing takes time, but once a person is able to accept and process the death of someone that they loved they will be able to take further steps toward living their life as they once did.

Accessing and interpreting the meaning behind the feelings that accompany grief is another function of grief counselling. Many people struggle to understand why they are feeling the way that they are, and grief counsellors can help them to piece this information together in a way that helps them to recognize the source of their emotions.

The 5 Stages of Grief

According to the Kubler-Ross theory, there are five stages to grief:

  • Denial
  • Anger
  • Bargaining
  • Depression
  • Acceptance

This theory might not be utilized by all grief counsellors, but one should rest assured that any experienced and accredited counsellor will be able to guide them through all of these emotions, regardless. Treatment is, of course, different for each patient. No two people experience grief in the same exact way.

When a loss has turned your world upside-down, it’s best not to try and face your feelings without support. Expressing your feelings with friends and family can be helpful in the healing process, but a grief counsellor will be able to most effectively help you to understand what your feelings mean and how to conquer the weight that they have placed upon your shoulders.
